Dev Spotlight: Chapter II - A Blocc World

After six years of working in game development, indie game dev Daniel founded his game company, Bluish Games. His first official game under the Blush Games banner is working title A Blocc World, which is an open-world single-player RPG, leaning into the simplistic style of voxel art, to create a fun and light hearted adventure in a vibrant world. With a planned release date of Q1 2026, A Blocc World began a few years ago as the ideas began to build up.

How did the original ideas behind A Blocc World come to life?

The original game, Blocc, was my university dissertation. The idea was to focus on combat, and provide an endless arena to test those skills. The combat was inspired by Fable 2 (Lionhead Studios). I always wanted to build a world to put those mechanics in, but was focused on other things. When playing Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, I started to get more ideas about puzzles and levels I could build, which got me designing the whole game. After a year on the back burner, I was ready to get started and so far the development has just taken off.

The voxel art style is such a unique style of art. What made you choose that style and what voxel art games have you taken inspiration from?

Back in uni, I had no confidence in my artistic abilities or taste, so my plan was to just use basic shapes, most things just being cubes. My lecturer is the one who forced me to try anything else, and pointed me in the direction of voxel art. My goal from there was to keep things minimal, as I'd grown quite fond of the cubes and didn't want to change them too much, although as more elements are added, I've tried to be more creative. Truthfully, I was quite concerned with not copying anything too heavily, as voxel art is quite a definitive style, so my main goal was just to make sure people didn't think they were playing Minecraft, which I think I've managed.

On your Steam page it mentions melee, ranged and magical combat abilities. Which one is your favorite and how do they differ from each other?

I've always been a fan of melee combat, as I find it the most satisfying. Although in the past, it's been very hard to balance to make sure it can actually be useful, ranged and magic combat having the advantage of working from a safe distance.

  • Melee combat will be focused on timing and survival skills, as a well timed swing can open the door to a flurry of attacks to put an enemy away.
  • Ranged combat will be focused on accuracy and efficiency as it will be slower and limited by ammunition.
  • Magic combat will be focused on creativity. A variety of spells will be available which will have unique effects on enemies, such as immobilization and extra damage over time.

On one of your Reddit posts I see images of a few types of enemies. One being an owl, another a snake and finally a dog. Are there any other enemy types you plan on adding?

The main enemies will be humanoid, similar to the player and will have access to the same three weapons. There will also be mini-bosses and full boss fights with distinct attacks, phases and available counter-play. The animals will be scattered throughout, but will show more strength in numbers than individual fighting prowess. At the very end, there will also be a very dramatic final boss, but I won't spoil too much on that.

What is something about A Blocc Party you plan on adding but haven't developed into the game yet?

The most exciting part of this for me is that I'll be making it a full RPG, with a story, NPCs and quests. Implementing all of that, to give players a proper world to explore and be part of, is what I'm most looking forward to, as it will make A Blocc World comparable to the games I grew up loving.

What is the best way for future players to get the latest information about A Blocc World?

I've got a Facebook page, Instagram page, YouTube channel, TikTok account and Steam page (very well connected really). I try to update social media at least once a week with my progress and any important developments. I go by Bluish Games everywhere.

If you weren't developing A Blocc World what would you be making?

I've got a few ideas for other games. My first officially released game was a mobile top-down space shooter called Blam. I've had vague images in my head about making a 3D version one day for console. I also started working on a procedurally generated racing game a few years back, but I want to keep that one for when I'm ready to move into online multiplayer. Of course, I will definitely be making a first person shooter at some point, because, with this art style and enemies exploding all around, how could I not?
